On an operating mine, plant, utility or transport asset, a drawing is more than a picture. It may guide construction, maintenance, isolation planning, procurement, compliance checks or future upgrades. If the drawing does not reflect the asset, or if the file does not comply with the owner's CAD standards, the consequences can extend well beyond an untidy document register.
Australian industrial projects often inherit drawings from different contractors, software platforms and project eras. Some are available only as scans or PDFs. Others contain outdated layers, title blocks, references, symbols or revision information. What is CAD conformance?
CAD conformance is the process of checking and updating drawing files so they meet a nominated client's drafting and document requirements. Depending on the organisation, those requirements may cover file format, seed or template files, levels or layers, text styles, line weights, cells and blocks, colour tables, title blocks, drawing numbers, references, revision data and plotting output.
For projects involving large asset owners, submitting a drawing that looks correct on screen may not be enough. The underlying file structure must also be usable, consistent and capable of passing the owner's checks.
Why non-conforming drawings create avoidable work
A non-conforming file can be rejected, returned for correction or become difficult to incorporate into the client's document system. This can delay handover and create repeated administration between engineers, contractors, document controllers and drafting teams.
Common issues include:
- incorrect or duplicated layers and levels;
- unapproved fonts, line styles, symbols or colour settings;
- broken external references or missing support files;
- title blocks and revision histories that do not match the client's template;
- poor conversion between DWG, DGN and PDF formats; and
- drawings that have been visually updated but do not accurately capture field changes.
As-built drawings are only useful when the changes are controlled
As-built drawings record how an asset was actually constructed or modified. They are commonly developed from site mark-ups, redlines, survey information, contractor records and approved design changes.
The drafting process should do more than copy annotations. Mark-ups need to be interpreted carefully, uncertainties need to be identified, and revisions need to remain traceable. Where field information is incomplete or contradictory, the issue should be raised rather than silently assumed.
This discipline is especially important on brownfield sites, where future work may depend on records created across many previous projects.
Converting legacy drawings without losing critical information
Legacy drawing conversion may involve paper-to-CAD, scan-to-CAD, PDF-to-DWG, DWG-to-DGN or the recreation of drawings in a current client template. Automated conversion can be helpful as a starting point, but engineering drawings normally require human review to address poor source quality, text recognition errors, line fragmentation, symbols, scale and file structure.
A reliable conversion workflow typically includes:
- reviewing the source and confirming the intended output;
- setting up the correct template, units, layers or levels and drawing standards;
- redrawing or converting geometry at the required accuracy;
- checking text, dimensions, symbols, references and title-block data;
- performing visual and file-structure quality checks; and
- issuing the required native files and PDFs with clear revision control.
